A unique rule exclusively benefiting Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani is reportedly causing frustration among other MLB teams. Bob Nightengale of USA Today recently addressed the Ohtani Rule, stating that other teams are resentful.
The Ohtani Rule and Its Impact
This special provision allows a starting pitcher to remain in the game as a designated hitter even after being removed from the mound. Initially adopted for the 2021 MLB All-Star Game, it was integrated into regular season play starting in 2022. However, since Ohtani is currently the only player consistently performing as a two-way star throughout the season, the rule effectively serves his unique talent.
Nightengale reported, Other teams are resentful that the Dodgers can carry one more pitcher on their roster because of the special exemption for two-way player Ohtani. The ability to retain Ohtani's potent bat in the lineup after his pitching duties conclude grants the Dodgers a roster flexibility that other teams, without a comparable two-way talent, do not possess.
Limitations and Postseason Implications
Despite this advantage, the Ohtani Rule has its limitations. It does not permit a player who started as a designated hitter to re-enter the game as a DH after making a relief pitching appearance. Nightengale further speculated on Ohtani's potential postseason role: The only way Ohtani could remain in the game is to move to the outfield or other positions, but he hasn't played in the outfield since 2021. For this reason, it is considered highly unlikely that Ohtani will play any role other than DH and starting pitcher in the postseason.
The debate surrounding the Ohtani Rule underscores the unprecedented nature of his two-way play and the challenges it poses for traditional baseball rules. While designed to encourage and accommodate rare talents like Ohtani, its practical application has led to perceived competitive imbalances. As Ohtani continues to break barriers in baseball, discussions about how to fairly integrate such exceptional players within established league structures are likely to persist.
