The upcoming Miyagi gubernatorial election, set for October, has gained a new contender. Masamune Wada, a 50-year-old former Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) member of the House of Councillors, has announced his intention to run as an independent.
A Political Veteran Joins the Fray
Wada was first elected to the upper house in 2013 from the Miyagi district representing the now-defunct Your Party. He later joined the ruling LDP but lost his seat in the July 2024 election. He now seeks to return to public office as governor of Miyagi Prefecture.
A Crowded Field
Wada will face incumbent Governor Yoshihiro Murai, 65, who is aiming for a sixth term. The race also includes prefectural assembly member Miyuki Yusawa, 62, and former city employee Shuhto Ito, 33, making for a competitive and diverse electoral battle.
The election will be a key test of political sentiment in the northeastern Japan prefecture.
