Japan reaches the top of Asia

Japan’s men’s national volleyball team defeated Iran 3-0 in the final of the 2026 Men’s Asian Volleyball Championship in Fukuoka on the 13th, capturing the continental title and securing qualification for the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Japan, ranked sixth in the world, overcame Iran, ranked 18th, by set scores of 25-21, 26-24 and 25-23 in a closely contested final.

The victory completed an unbeaten campaign for Japan and continued the team’s impressive rise on the international stage. By winning the championship, Japan also earned its third consecutive Olympic qualification, following appearances at the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Games.

Stars deliver under pressure

The final brought together the only two unbeaten teams remaining in the tournament. Japan faced an early challenge in the opening set, falling three points behind at the start. Yuji Nishida quickly helped change the momentum with a powerful service ace, and Japan gradually began to control the rhythm of the match.

Japan created a 19-15 advantage after a series of three straight points, with Nishida and Ran Takahashi playing central roles in attack. Japan’s championship run included victories over Oman, Bahrain, Australia, India and South Korea before the final. The team won every match, dropping only one set during the tournament. The result strengthens Japan’s position as one of Asia’s leading volleyball nations and provides valuable momentum ahead of the Los Angeles Olympics.
