Tokyo police have arrested an Iranian national on suspicion of sexually assaulting a woman in a hotel in 2014, with DNA evidence playing a crucial role in solving the cold case.
Arrest Made After DNA Match
Mostafa Rajabi Ghol, 37, was arrested by Shibuya Police Station on suspicion of quasi-rape. The alleged incident took place at a hotel in Shinjuku Ward on September 3, 2014, where the suspect is accused of assaulting a woman in her 20s who was intoxicated at the time.
Suspect Denies Allegations
The suspect has denied the charges, claiming the encounter was consensual. However, investigators secured his arrest after a DNA sample from the 2014 case matched evidence collected from Ghol following a separate arrest for an alleged indecent assault in July of this year.
Breakthrough in Cold Case
The match provided the breakthrough needed to reopen the long-dormant investigation. The use of DNA technology to solve older cases highlights advances in forensic science and persistent efforts by law enforcement to pursue justice for victims, even years after crimes occur.
