Record-Breaking Downpour Hits Kagawa, Disrupting Air Travel

September 16, 2025

Intense rainfall struck Kagawa Prefecture on the afternoon of the 16th, leading to the issuance of a record-breaking short-duration heavy rain warning and causing significant disruptions to air travel.

Torrential Rain and a Official Warning

Unstable atmospheric conditions, influenced by moist air, triggered the severe weather. At 4:37 p.m., the Japan Meteorological Agency issued the warning for Kagawa Prefecture, noting that approximately 90 mm of rain fell in just one hour near the town of Manno by 4:30 p.m.

Impact on Takamatsu Airport

The severe weather had an immediate impact on Takamatsu Airport. Flights from Okinawa experienced substantial delays. Arriving flights from Tokyo and South Korea were also forced to wait on the runway after landing for safety checks due to the adverse conditions. Travelers were advised to check for the latest flight information.

Continued Weather Advisory

Authorities urged residents to remain vigilant against heavy rain and thunder until around 9 p.m. that evening. Forecasts for the 17th also indicated a need for caution, with rain and thunderstorms expected primarily in the afternoon across both Okayama and Kagawa prefectures.
