Tokyo officials have lifted flood occurrence and flood risk alerts for several rivers across the city on Thursday, September 11th, after a day of heavy rainfall raised water levels to dangerous heights.
Warnings Issued and Rescinded
Authorities had initially issued a Flood Occurrence Alert for the Yanase River in Setagaya Ward and the Tachiaigawa River in Shinagawa Ward in the early afternoon. These alerts, the most severe warning indicating flooding was imminent or already happening, were lifted by 6:00 PM as the threat subsided.
Similarly, Flood Risk Alerts were issued for the Marunokocho River in Setagaya Ward, the Shinoshirakawa River at three locations in Nerima Ward, and the Non River in Ota Ward. All these alerts were also rescinded by 5:40 PM as water levels receded and the danger passed.
Joint Meteorological Warnings Lifted
In a coordinated effort, the Japan Meteorological Agency and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government had jointly issued Flood Risk Alerts for the Meguro River in Meguro Ward and the Shakujiigawa River in Nerima Ward. These warnings were lifted by 6:05 PM, confirming that the risk of overflow had diminished for these waterways as well.
The series of alerts and subsequent all-clears highlight the rapid response to changing weather conditions and the importance of heeding official warnings during severe weather events.
