Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Shinjiro Koizumi met with Prime Minister Ishiba on the 17th to formally communicate his intention to run in the upcoming Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leadership election. Koizumi indicated his plan to inherit parts of the Ishiba policy line, including the establishment of a Disaster Management Agency and certain agricultural policies.
Formal Notification
Minister Koizumi stated that he had informed the Prime Minister of his decision, following discussions with his local supporters. The meeting at the Prime Minister's official residence lasted approximately 40 minutes. Following the discussion, Koizumi explained his rationale for running, citing a sense of crisis and the need for the LDP to firmly rebuild its current structure to properly address pressing issues like high prices, public safety concerns, and foreign and security policy.
Policy Continuity
According to Koizumi, Prime Minister Ishiba expressed a desire for certain agricultural policies, notably those concerning rice production, to "never be rolled back." Koizumi affirmed his commitment, stating his intention to "solidly inherit" aspects of the Ishiba administration's approach—specifically concerning regional economies, the Disaster Management Agency, and agricultural policy—and to "advance them without rolling them back." This move sets the stage for a significant contest within the ruling party as it seeks to redefine its leadership and direction.
