Following his loss to Sanae Takaichi in the Liberal Democratic Party leadership election, Shinjiro Koizumi offered a gracious concession, attributing the outcome to his own shortcomings and pledging full support for the new leader.
A Gracious Concession
In remarks to reporters shortly after the results were announced, the former Agriculture Minister stated, "I am sorry that I could not win. Once again, following last year, it is my own lack of strength. I want to properly face this." His comments referenced his previous unsuccessful bid for the party leadership in 2024.
Pledge for Team LDP
Koizumi emphasized the importance of party unity moving forward. "I believe it is the duty of the winner to realize what candidate Takaichi advocated," he said. "And including myself, who fought in this election, we must all unite under the newly selected president to build 'Team LDP.'" He added that every member must fulfill their responsibilities to help the party regain public trust, calling it a natural course of action.
The defeat leaves the political future of the popular young lawmaker, once seen as a prime minister-in-waiting, in a new and uncertain phase as the party rallies behind its historic new leader.
