A classic Japanese toy gets a wearable makeover
Bandai has introduced the Tamagotchi ring, the first ring-shaped device in the long-running Tamagotchi series. Created to celebrate the franchise’s 30th anniversary, the compact digital pet is designed to be worn on a finger, allowing users to care for their virtual character in an especially portable format.
The device is priced at 7,700 yen, including tax, and is available in three color combinations: Pink & Pearl White, Blue & Metallic Gold, and Black & Metallic Silver. Its small size is one of its defining features. While the original Tamagotchi released in 1996 measured approximately 50 millimeters in length, the Tamagotchi ring measures just 28 millimeters—roughly half the size.
A miniature device built around the core Tamagotchi experience
The ring also features the smallest color LCD display used in the series since color screens were introduced in 2008. The screen measures 0.56 inches, but Bandai says it uses a high-resolution 118-by-138 display to help make the visuals easy to enjoy despite the reduced dimensions.
Rather than attempting to reproduce every function found on larger or more advanced digital pet devices, the Tamagotchi ring focuses on the series’ central caregiving gameplay. Users can raise a selection of 30 Tamagotchi characters representing popular figures from the franchise’s three-decade history.
The device does not connect to smartphones or other external equipment. According to Bandai, limiting the functions to the essential care activities made it possible to achieve the ring’s remarkably small design. This approach also preserves the simple, self-contained appeal that has helped Tamagotchi remain recognizable across generations.
Strong demand from fans
The unusual design quickly attracted attention on social media. Yui Okamoto of Bandai’s Toy Business Department said reservations reached the planned limit on the same day the product was announced. Fans reportedly shared comments expressing a desire to collect all three colors and excitement about being able to wear a Tamagotchi.
Bandai explained that the concept emerged while its teams were considering an especially surprising device for the series’ 30th anniversary. A technology team presented a small LCD component, which led to the idea of creating the smallest Tamagotchi possible—one that could be worn on a finger and cared for almost anywhere.
Reservations opened through Premium Bandai on August 27, but both the first and second reservation rounds have already closed after demand exceeded expectations. Bandai has encouraged interested customers to check the official website for information about future developments and availability.
Three decades of Japanese pop culture
First launched in Japan in 1996, Tamagotchi became a global cultural phenomenon by turning daily virtual care into a simple, portable play experience. Its small screens, distinctive characters, and routine-based gameplay made it a memorable part of childhood for many people, while later generations helped introduce the brand to new audiences.
The Tamagotchi ring reflects how Japanese toy makers continue to refresh familiar intellectual properties through compact, lifestyle-oriented products. By combining nostalgia with wearable design, Bandai is positioning the anniversary edition as both a collectible and a playful everyday accessory.
Bandai says additional 30th-anniversary initiatives are planned, with more information to be announced. The official promotional video is available on YouTube, while product information is listed on the Premium Bandai website.
