Toyota Restructures US Production, Shifts Some Lexus Output to Japan

September 26, 2025

In response to new US auto tariffs, Toyota Motor Corporation is reorganizing its North American production strategy, consolidating Lexus assembly and moving some production back to Japan while expanding hybrid vehicle output stateside.

Lexus Production Streamlined

Toyota plans to consolidate its two US-based Lexus production facilities into one location. Consequently, production of certain Lexus models will be shifted to Japan. This move leverages the cost-effectiveness of exporting high-margin luxury vehicles despite tariffs.

Betting on Hybrids in the US

The vacated US plant is slated for production of hybrid vehicles (HVs). This strategy aims to mitigate tariff impacts by building popular, fuel-efficient models locally, even though US production costs are significantly higher than in Japan.

A Long-Planned Strategy

According to a former Toyota executive, this restructuring has been meticulously planned since the first Trump administration. Toyota's principle of building one model per line requires careful, long-term planning for supply chain and cost optimization. This approach, combined with Toyota's diverse brand portfolio, helps insulate the company from over-reliance on any single market or policy change.
