A budget-friendly way to explore Hokkaido
JR Hokkaido has announced a new limited-time rail pass designed to make weekday travel around Japan’s northern island more affordable and flexible. Called the “JR Hokkaido Doko Iku? Heijitsu Pass,” or “Doko Pass” for short, the ticket will provide unlimited travel on JR Hokkaido conventional lines during eligible weekdays in late autumn 2026.
The pass will be available in two versions: a one-day ticket costing ¥5,000 and a consecutive two-day ticket priced at ¥8,000. There is no child version of the pass. Both options allow unlimited boarding and exiting on JR Hokkaido local and rapid trains using ordinary-class unreserved seats.
Limited express travel included
One of the most attractive features for visitors is that selected limited express journeys can be taken without paying an additional fare. The one-day pass includes up to two rides on limited express trains, while the two-day pass includes up to four rides in total. Travelers who use more limited express services than the permitted number will need to purchase the necessary additional tickets separately.
This benefit could make the pass particularly useful for visitors covering long distances across Hokkaido. The island is Japan’s largest prefecture by area, and popular destinations such as Sapporo, Asahikawa, Obihiro, Hakodate and Kushiro are separated by considerable distances. Although journey times and train availability vary by route, including limited express access may make it easier to combine major cities and sightseeing areas in a single itinerary.
When and how the pass can be used
The Doko Pass will be valid only on weekdays from October 26 through November 20, 2026. The eligible period falls during Hokkaido’s late-autumn season, when travelers may encounter colorful foliage, crisp weather and quieter conditions at many tourist destinations compared with peak summer periods.
For the two-day version, both days of travel must be weekdays. The tickets will be sold through JR East’s online booking service, Eki-net, from one month before the intended start date until 14 days before use. After purchasing the pass online, travelers must collect a physical ticket at designated ticket vending machines and other specified locations within the JR Hokkaido area.
Each pass is valid for one person only and cannot be shared by multiple travelers. Visitors should also check train timetables, route conditions and ticket collection requirements in advance, particularly if they are building a tight schedule around limited express services.
Rail travel combined with rental cars
JR Hokkaido will also offer a special rental-car plan during the pass period. At eight participating station-based rental-car locations in Hokkaido, customers who combine a Doko Pass with a rental-car booking can receive a 50 percent discount on the rental-car fee. This combination could be useful for travelers who want to use trains between major cities and then drive to rural areas, lakes, national parks or destinations with limited public transportation.
Hokkaido’s answer to a popular weekday pass
The new ticket has been compared with JR East’s “Tabiseyo Heijitsu! JR East Tabi Kyun Hayawari Pass,” commonly known as the “Kyun Pass.” That limited-time weekday pass costs ¥10,000 for one day or ¥18,000 for two consecutive days and can cover reserved seats on shinkansen and limited express services when reservations are made in advance.
While the Doko Pass has different conditions and does not offer the same nationwide-style high-speed rail coverage, its lower price and focus on Hokkaido could appeal to cost-conscious domestic travelers, foreign visitors and residents looking for an efficient autumn getaway. For travelers able to visit on weekdays, it offers a promising way to experience more of Hokkaido by rail while keeping transportation costs under control.
