Royal Traditions Continue

Prince Hisahito of Akishino, the youngest grandson of Emperor Emeritus Akihito, visited the tomb of Emperor Showa in Hachioji, Tokyo on September 9 to report the completion of his coming-of-age ceremonies. The 17-year-old prince, dressed in formal morning coat attire, offered tamagushi sacred branches in traditional Shinto fashion.

Completing Imperial Duties

Following his visit to Emperor Showa's tomb, Prince Hisahito continued to pay respects at the tombs of Emperor Taisho, Empress Teimei, and Empress Kojun. These visits form part of the traditional observances marking his transition to adulthood within the imperial family.

Modern Royalty in Contemporary Japan

The prince's coming-of-age celebrations included a formal ceremony on September 6 and will conclude with a luncheon hosting leaders of Japan's three government branches on September 10. His adulthood comes at a significant time for the imperial family as it continues to adapt to modern expectations while maintaining centuries-old traditions.
