Toyota Motor Corporation has officially launched its \"e-Palette,\" a versatile electric vehicle (EV) designed for use as a mobile shop, people mover, and more, with ambitious plans to integrate Level 4 autonomous driving technology by fiscal year 2027.
The vehicle was announced by Chairman Akio Toyoda at a ceremony marking the opening of Toyota Arena Tokyo. Initially, the e-Palette will require a human driver, with systems assisting in some operations. The long-term vision, however, is full autonomy, allowing the vehicle to operate without a driver under specific conditions.
\"In the future, I believe it will become autonomous,\" Toyoda stated, while emphasizing a safety-first approach. \"We are proceeding with safety as our top priority, so first and foremost, we want people to use it.\"
Versatility and Availability
Toyota envisions the e-Palette being adopted by businesses and local governments for a wide range of applications, from selling goods at event venues to providing transport services. The vehicle has a capacity of 17 people.
It will be available on a made-to-order basis, with Toyota handling orders directly. The manufacturer's suggested retail price starts at ¥29 million, positioning it as a specialized commercial vehicle for innovative mobility solutions.
This launch marks a significant step in Toyota's strategy to expand beyond traditional automobiles into the broader fields of mobility and automated logistics.
