Nagoya on Alert: Suspicious Fires Target Home Mailbox and Company Trash Can

September 15, 2025

Residents in Nagoya's Nishi Ward are on edge after two suspicious fires broke out within a short time and close proximity to each other on Monday morning.

The first incident was reported around 6:30 AM at a residence in Yasujimachi. A resident discovered his home's entrance mailbox was on fire and immediately called emergency services. Upon inspection, a burning towel had been stuffed inside the mailbox. The resident managed to extinguish the fire himself; no injuries were reported.

Roughly thirty minutes later, around 7:00 AM, a second fire was reported about 100 meters southwest of the first location. This time, a trash can next to a vending machine on company property was set ablaze. The fire was put out by police officers who arrived on the scene following a report from a passerby.

Police Investigating Possible Link

Given the close timing and geographical proximity, local police are investigating the two incidents as potentially connected. The method of ignition—using a readily available item like a towel—suggests intentional activity.

Authorities are likely reviewing any available security camera footage from the area and appealing to the public for information. The motive behind the fires remains unknown.
