Travel YouTuber's Whereabouts Unknown After China Video, Followers Fear Detainment

September 17, 2025

Concerns are mounting for travel YouTuber Bappa Shota, who went silent for months after publishing a video about China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. His recent online update, intended to reassure followers, has instead deepened their anxiety and suspicion regarding his safety and freedom.

Mysterious Silence

Shota, known for his adventurous travel content, published a video titled 'The Reality of China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Zone and Internment Camps Was Unbelievable' on June 28th. Following its release, his usual stream of content and social media activity ceased abruptly, leading to widespread worry among his subscriber base of over 1.3 million.

An Ominous Update

On September 17th, his YouTube channel was finally updated with a text post. It read, "What's up, everyone? Long time no see. Sorry to keep you waiting. It looks like I can finally release a new video this weekend." The message continued, "I'm really sorry for worrying so many of you. I'm looking forward to sharing the beginning of a new journey with you all. See you this weekend. Adios."

Fueling Suspicion

Rather than calming fears, the post had the opposite effect. Followers quickly noted uncharacteristic elements, such as typos and the use of an accent mark on the "o" in "Adios," which is not typical for him. The cryptic nature of the message, lacking any specific mention of his location, has led many to believe he may be under duress or even detained by authorities. Comments flooded in expressing deep concern, with many demanding a live stream as proof of life and well-being, and others pleading for him to return to Japan immediately.
